Re: Important Update On Program Change
Drivers For Survivors (DFS) is presently facing a major financial challenge. We have been struggling to deal with the loss of a $140,000 annual government grant. This income stream covered close to half of our operating costs. Shortly after the loss of this revenue, COVID-19 forced us to reschedule of our signature fundraising gala from April to a virtual event in August. All of our other fundraising events for 2020 have been canceled as well.
Because we deal with vulnerable clients, we have had to rethink everything we do to maximize client and driver safety. We have streamlined our day-to-day operations to try to make our limited financial resources get us through these incredibly challenging times.
With heavy hearts, we have made the difficult decision to close our program effective February 2021. With the loss of revenue due to the COVID 19 pandemic, it is impossible to keep this program going. The last rides given by DFS will be on January 31, 2021. We are proactively working with the City of Fremont and various medical providers to do a warm hand-off to give cancer patients an alternative to get to and from appointments. The City of Fremont’s Ride-On Tri-City! Program will work with all of our clients, including those that live outside of the Tri-City area, to make sure they are linked to other transportation options for their medical appointments as well as any other transportation needs they may have. If you would like assistance from the Ride-On Tri-City! Program, please let DFS know and we will have their program staff connect with you via phone to help you through this transition -or- feel free to contact them directly for assistance at 510-574-2053.
Even though we are closing, we want to celebrate the fact that over 300 volunteers have provided more than 21,500 rides to 610+ clients. As one of our current or former clients, we hope that you felt cared for and respected by one of our compassionate volunteer drivers. This is the reason why DFS was created in the first place.
